Plain answers to the questions people ask us most, in the order they usually ask them. Written for anyone who would rather not read a full privacy notice to find out how we got their address.

We are Business Leads, a trading name of Email First Ltd, of Eastham Hall, Eastham, Cheshire, CH62 0AF. We send B2B email campaigns for our customers, to UK business contacts on our own list, from our own systems.

Why did I get an email from you?

One of our customers asked us to tell UK businesses about what they sell, and your company looked like the sort of business that might want it. We sent the email. The customer did not send it, and the customer did not have your address before you showed an interest.

Where did you get my details?

From licensed business data providers and from public Companies House records. Your details were not taken from your website and you were not signed up to anything. We hold work details only, so your name, your work email address, your job title, your employer, its town and its industry.

Are you allowed to do that?

Yes, within limits we keep to. UK marketing email is governed by PECR, which allows unsolicited marketing email to corporate subscribers, meaning people contacted in their working role at a company. Contacts are matched against Companies House records, and sole traders are excluded by default because PECR treats them as individuals rather than companies.

Under UK GDPR our lawful basis is legitimate interests. We have weighed our customers’ interest in finding businesses that want what they sell against your right to be left alone, and written that assessment down. Ask and we will send you a copy.

Who is the email actually from?

Us, on a customer’s behalf, and the email says so. It comes from our own sending addresses and never from a customer’s mailbox, and it carries our trading name, our registered company name and our postal address. If you cannot work out who sent an email, it was not us.

What do you track?

Whether the email was opened, whether a link in it was clicked, and whether the landing page we built for that customer was visited. Links pass through our own domain, and the email carries a small image on our domain that records an open. We log the time, the browser type and the IP address, and we discard opens caused by security scanners rather than by people.

It all stays on our own systems. No third party tracking company sees any of it.

Do you sell my details?

No. Never to anybody. If you show interest, by opening the email, clicking a link or visiting the landing page, your work contact details go to that one customer so they can follow up, and to nobody else. Our terms require them to use those details lawfully, to stop if you ask them to, and never to pass them on.

How do I stop it?

Use the unsubscribe link in any email we have sent you. It works immediately, with no account to sign into, no password and no reason to give. If you would rather write to a person, email hello@business-leads.co.uk and we will do it for you.

One opt-out covers everything. We keep a single suppression list that applies to every customer we work for, so stopping one campaign stops all of them. The list is permanent and it is never cleared. If the same address turns up in a data import two years from now, it still cannot be emailed.

What else can I ask for?

All of it by email, with no form to fill in and no reason to give. We answer within one calendar month, usually far sooner.

• See what you hold. We send you a copy of everything we have about you.
• Correct it. Tell us what is wrong and we put it right.
• Delete it. We remove your record. All we keep is a scrambled fingerprint of your email address that cannot be turned back into the address, which is what stops it ever being emailed again.
• Object. For marketing this right is absolute. Tell us to stop and we stop.

I am thinking of becoming a customer

Then two things are worth knowing. Campaigns go out from our own sending addresses, so your own domain and your own reputation are never put at risk. And the business contact data is ours, already built and already screened, so you are not buying a list or uploading one.
